Just got back from a week away in Exmoor. We stayed at Weir Bungalow in the small village of Brendon , ten minutes drive away from the towns of Lynton on Lynmouth. What a beautiful place, with a real rugged coastline and the green lush mooreland in stark contrast in one scene. We has a rough idea of areas we wanted to visit but no hard plans. We managed to visit Brendon, Lynton, Lynmouth, Porlock weir, Watersmeet, Valley of the Rocks, Ilfracombe, Woolacombe bay, Heddon's Mouth, Wringcliff Beach and Horner Woods to name a few places we managed to get to. As we stayed in the UK i always like to try and take all my gear with me so i can take what i need as i think i will need it. I have it all in a Pelican Case and use a Lowepro flipside 400 as a day pack. Although i also use a 35litre Lowe Alpine backpack which i found to be more comfortable to wear with the weight of the gear. I am not getting any younger so need all the help i can get.
We left Ramsgate in the early hours of the morning, around 06:00 hrs .We arrived at the bungalow at around mid day. The journey was event free as well as traffic free, no queues even on the A303 at Stonehenge, that was a surprise ! After we had a brief rest, a cup of tea and unpacked the car we decided to head of out to explore the local area. We ended up doing a six mile round trip to Watersmeet.
The route took us through the village towards town hall car park and the continued down the road, across the footbridge above and into a wooded area with a well marked footpath running parallel to the river.
all the way to the National Trust Property of Watersmeet, seen below.
We made it but only just in time for a quick tea before they shut at 16:30hrs. It dawned on us that it had taken a while to walk to this place and we would be fighting the time and therefore the light on the return leg. We had not intended on going so far when we set off and so had nothing with us, we were a little concerned but we did make it back before it got dark. This was the end of our first day, we settled in for the night and planned the rest of the week. More blog post to follow as and when i process images etc......................
